About Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is a customized combination of procedures and/or treatments designed to help restore and improve a mother’s pre-baby body after changes brought on by pregnancy, childbirth, and/or breastfeeding. With the help of Dr. Waqqas Jalil, a highly trained plastic surgeon from FORM Face & Body, we have answered some of the most frequently asked questions about the mommy makeover procedure.

Commonly asked questions about Mommy Makeover

1. What is a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy makeovers can include cosmetic plastic surgery, non-surgical treatments, or a combination. A mommy makeover includes all the chosen procedures in just one surgery, so the patient only has to go under general anesthesia once and only has to endure one recovery.

2. What are the most common Mommy Makeovers?

Mommy makeover’s vary depending on which areas have been most affected by childbirth – based on the unique needs of each patient, surgeons will customize and combine several procedures that are to be performed in a single surgical session.

The most common combination of procedures included in a “Mommy Makeover” center around a breast and abdomen procedure (e.g., breast augmentation/lift and tummy tuck).
List of procedures mommy makeovers may include:

  • Breast Lift
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Breast Reduction
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Circumferential Abdominoplasty
  • Liposuction
  • Perineoplasty, Vaginoplasty and/or a Labiaplasty
  • Laser Skin Rejuvenation treatments

3. Who is a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Dr. Waqqas Jalil says: “A “Mommy Makeover” is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is designed to help restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body. It typically involves a combination of procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction.

A good candidate for a Mommy Makeover is a woman who has completed her childbearing and breastfeeding, has achieved a stable weight, and is in good overall health. She should also have realistic expectations about the results of the procedure and be motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle after the surgery.

It’s important to note that every woman’s body is different, and the specific procedures recommended for a Mommy Makeover will depend on her individual needs and goals. It’s best to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover and which procedures are appropriate for you.”

4. How is a Mommy Makeover performed?

Mommy makeovers are usually performed as outpatient surgery – meaning you likely do not have to stay at the surgical facility overnight and can recover at home. You will be given general anesthesia and all your chosen procedures will be completed in one surgical session (how these surgeries are performed depends on what procedures were chosen during your consultation with your surgeon).

Please see FAQ’s for each procedure you are considering for additional information (e.g., tummy tuck, breast augmentation).

5. How long does mommy makeover surgery take?

Depending on the complexity and type of procedures performed during a mommy makeover, the surgery time may range from 3-6+ hours.

6. What is the recovery like after a Mommy Makeover surgery?

Dr. Waqqas Jalil weighed in on the recovery process for mommy makeovers – “Recovery after a Mommy Makeover can vary depending on the specific procedures that were performed. However, it’s generally a significant surgery, and recovery can take several weeks to several months. After the surgery, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated areas. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help manage any pain or discomfort. You will also need to wear compression garments to help minimize swelling and support your healing tissues.

In the first few days after the surgery, you will need to rest and avoid any strenuous activities. You will need to avoid lifting anything heavy or doing any activities that put strain on your abdominal muscles, as this could interfere with the healing process.

It’s essential to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully, including any restrictions on physical activity, medication use, and wound care. You will also need to attend follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress and ensure that you are on track to a smooth recovery. It’s important to have realistic expectations about the recovery process and to be patient as your body heals. It can take several weeks or even months before you see the full results of your Mommy Makeover. But with proper care and patience, you can enjoy a significant improvement in your appearance and confidence.”

7. When will I see the results?

Dr. Waqqas Jalil stated it is important to have realistic expectations when undergoing a mommy makeover procedure, stating: “The timing of when you will see results after a Mommy Makeover can vary depending on the specific procedures that were performed, as well as individual factors such as your age, health, and healing process. However, it’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that the recovery process and visible results can take time.

In general, you may start to see some initial improvement in the treated areas within the first few weeks after the surgery. However, you will likely experience swelling and bruising, which can temporarily obscure the final results. As your body continues to heal and swelling subsides, you will gradually begin to see the full results of your Mommy Makeover. This can take several weeks to several months, depending on the extent of the procedures performed. For example, if you had a tummy tuck, you may see a significant improvement in the appearance of your abdomen after about 3-6 months, as your skin tightens and your scars fade.

It’s essential to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully, including any restrictions on physical activity, medication use, and wound care. Attending follow-up appointments with your surgeon is also crucial to monitor your healing progress and ensure that you are on track to a smooth recovery.

Overall, it’s important to have patience and allow your body the time it needs to heal properly to achieve the best possible results from your Mommy Makeover.”

8. How long do the results last?

“The duration of results after a Mommy Makeover can vary depending on individual factors such as age, genetics, lifestyle habits, and the specific procedures that were performed. However, in general, the results of a Mommy Makeover can be long-lasting with proper maintenance.

It’s important to note that a Mommy Makeover is not a permanent solution, and the aging process and lifestyle factors can affect the longevity of the results. However, with a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking, you can help to prolong the results of your Mommy Makeover.

The breast augmentation and breast lift procedures can provide long-lasting results, although changes in weight, hormonal fluctuations, and pregnancy can affect the appearance of the breasts over time. A tummy tuck can also provide long-lasting results, but weight gain or pregnancy after the procedure can affect the outcome.

It’s important to maintain a healthy and stable weight after a Mommy Makeover to help ensure the longevity of the results. You should also continue to follow a healthy lifestyle and attend regular check-ups with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.

Overall, the results of a Mommy Makeover can last for many years with proper maintenance, but it’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that the aging process and lifestyle factors can affect the outcome over time.” – Dr. Waqqas Jalil

9. How much do mommy makeover surgeries cost in Canada?

The cost of a mommy makeover depends on things like geographic location, the surgeon & their experience, and the complexity of your procedures/how many procedures were chosen. Typically, the surgery ranges from $10,000 to $30,000 with the average cost being around $15,000-$20,000.

10. Can you finance a mommy makeover?

Yes, you can finance a Mommy Makeover! Given the high cost of various Mommy Makeover procedures, many patients turn to plastic surgery financing to help manage the costs. Specialized financing companies, like Beautifi, offer plans specifically designed for medical and dental procedures to make procedures more affordable for patients.

11. What are the risks of a Mommy Makeover?

The procedures that individuals commonly choose for mommy makeovers are generally considered to be safe, however as with any surgery, there are potential risks. Dr. Waqqas Jalil discussed important risks and potential complications to consider before undergoing the mommy makeover procedure.

“As with any surgical procedure, a Mommy Makeover carries some risks and potential complications. It’s important to understand the risks involved and discuss them with your surgeon before deciding to undergo the surgery. Some of the potential risks of a Mommy Makeover include:

  • Bleeding and infection: These are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Your surgeon will take steps to minimize these risks, such as administering antibiotics and carefully monitoring your recovery.
  • Scarring: All surgical procedures result in some scarring. Your surgeon will make incisions in discreet locations whenever possible and will take steps to minimize scarring, such as using techniques that place the incisions within natural skin creases or hiding them within undergarments or swimwear.
  • Poor wound healing: Some individuals may experience delayed wound healing or poor scarring due to factors such as poor nutrition, smoking, or certain medical conditions. Your surgeon will evaluate your medical history and current health to determine if you are at risk for poor wound healing and will take steps to minimize this risk.
  • Blood clots: Individuals who undergo surgery are at an increased risk of developing blood clots, which can be a serious complication. Your surgeon will take steps to minimize this risk, such as having you walk around as soon as possible after the surgery and using compression stockings.
  • Anesthesia risks: Anesthesia is generally safe, but it does carry some risks, including allergic reactions and respiratory issues. Your anesthesia team will closely monitor you during the surgery to minimize these risks.

It’s important to discuss any concerns you may have about the risks of a Mommy Makeover with your surgeon before undergoing the procedure. Your surgeon can help you understand your individual risks and take steps to minimize them.”
